bad to have heat lamp on 24/7

chewieu Mar 15, 2004 12:14 AM

My RES hatchlings seem to LOVE basking in the heat lamp.. even when it's nighttime and i'm getting ready to turn off the lamp. Would it be okay to just leave it on all the time and let them decide when they're done? I have a little hollow/log that's dark that they could hide in under water if they wanted i suppose. Thanks

No, you should not keep the lamp on 24/7. They need a day and night cycle just like we do. What is the temp of the water? The water should be around 76-78. If you do not have a submerisble heater, I would get one.

It isn't especially bad for them, they even make bulbs that are infared to use at night (i use them to maintain a good temp during the cold months) your turtle won't really stay long enouph to hurt itself, but i would definatly make sure that your humidity is right. You should mist at least once a day and get a humidity gauge to be sure.
