vivarium/terrarium for a frog

ortega Mar 15, 2004 11:39 AM

Well, I have always loved frogs, but have never kept one. I was givin this vivarium and thought it would work out well as a vivarium with plants and frogs. Any one with experiance think this would be a good idea. I got a lot of researc to do pertaining to plants and frogs, but I want to know if this is as good an idea as I think it is. The top has an opening, so the frog has to be contained somehow; any ideas?

its got a little more space than a 10 gallon, so wouldn't that be good for a couple of dart frogs?

neat. i'd say there would only be enough space for a pair of darts in there. email me if you would like info on how i create my vivariums.

Hey is that acrylic or glass? How will you light it? Probably a self standing light? Catalina has some. How will you close the top? Darts are nortorious for getting out of a small crack! YOu have to fruit fly proof it to make sure that its frog proof too. IF its acrylic you won't be able to heat it without the possibility of warpages. Although if you put it into a room that is warm enough(not below 65F)the inside of the terrarium should not get too cold. How will you drain it? Closes systems will still need excess water to removed at sometime. Try a bigger frog instead of the thumbnails of course, I worry that first there is not enough vertical space and 2nd thumbnails will get out of that dome too easily. A bigger Dart might not escape as easily. Darts are expensive to loose! Looks beautiful! Good luck and have fun! Maggie

I actually almost bought one of these a while back and thought it would make a great dart tank. I wanted to put a limb in the center and cover it with bromeliads and then have substrate all around the limb. This way you would have a 360 degree view of the tank/frogs. What kind of opening does it have? Is it just in the top? Could you put some fiberglas screen over it? If excess water is a concern in the bottom, you could always drill a hole and put in a drain. I have been using PVC and nylon fittings to make my own bulkheads for this. You could use a floor lamp to light it and put in a 5000K compact fluorescent bulb or you could hang a fluorescent light above it. I have used undertank heaters on small acrylic tank before and had no problem, but if your room is above 68 degrees you should be fine.

Ken thanks for the cool idea! I think this will be able to wok out for me, but i am uncertian which frog will do the best in this type of vivarium. I think dart frogs are extreemly attractive, but are they the best suited for my purpose? Does anyone have any suggestions for a type of frog. I am new to frogs.

You might try asking at dendroboard. Do a web search for that term and you should find it.
