Need help choosing a filter

tegunderpressure Mar 15, 2004 03:25 PM

I currently have two Map turtles in a 35 gallon tank. It is an Eclipse tank so it is set up for fish, but I have it filled with 30 gallons, a Turtle dock, and a small filter suction cupped to the side. The filter just isnt cutting it, so I was looking at the Fluval 4 submersible filter, but I dont like the clutter in the tank. I was also considering the Fluval 104 or 204 canister filter, but they are very large, and this tank is in my room, and I tried very hard to combine a good looking tank with functionality for the turtles.

Does anyone have thoughts on what filter might be good for me?

Also, it has a cover over the top that houses the lights, so I cant have a unit that hangs over the side.

Well you need a bigger tank anyway. Depending on the size of your maps now, you may want to jsut go get a bigger tank before you waste your money on a small filter and find it not powerful enough for a large tank. I would go with at least a 55gal. Then I would go for a FilStar XP3. You really should get a canister filter. Internal filters just do not do the job. Maps are very sensative to water quality and need thier water crystal clear. Heres a link to the page where you can get the filter for the best price.

Well they are still very small, one is smaller than a silver dollar and the other is slightly larger. I considered getting the larger tank but I have not concluded if they will be worth the effort. I dont mean to sound that I dont care about them but in order to accomodate a larger tank I will need to rearrange furniture atleast, I may even need a larger dresser.

Well since they are still small the 30gal should be fine for a while. I would still get the FilStar XP3 though. You will eventually need to get a larger tank so why not buy the nig filter now, instead of buying a small one, then upgrading again when getting a larger tank. You will save money going with the larger filter right from the start.

My only issue is space. I really dont have room for a huge filter, the tank is in my room setting on a dresser, and if it were on the floor it would really be in the way. My only real option is to cut the floor out of one of the droors (sp?) and actually set the filter inside the dresser, and Im not sure if I want to go hacking up my furniture.

Well when you say huge... its not really huge. Like it will take up a 1' x 1' square. Thats not HUGE.

Get rid of that crappy top and build a canopy hood. That hood was designed for fish.
