DRUMS IN SNAKE ROOM------- Good or bad idea?????

jayskee Mar 15, 2004 06:37 PM

Now this seems like a dumb question... I would never ever think about putting drums in my herp (mostly snakes) room at all. I have about 20 snakes and a couple lizards . Now my little little brother wants to get some drums and he asked me if he could put them downstairs in the snake room... I told him i dont know yet....... Do you think it might startle the snakes at all...I was wondering if anybody can tell me why you would object to this situation..........thanks Joe

How good is your brother?........

My snakes are kept in the living room along with my stereo..(duh)...and my music doesn't seem to bother them......however.....they do get pissed when the wife listens to her music........but I can't blame 'em

Hope this helped

Joe,
being a drummer myself, I wouldn't recommend keeping animals in the same room. Sound pressure levels from the bass drum and snare alone will reach 120-140 db. Even though snakes have not external ears, these frequencies will drive them crazy.

Lizards are another story. They do have an external ear and it will cause serious stress for them.

Unless your brother has the money for a nice electronic set, I would advise finding another room for practice. If you would like to discuss this in a little more detail, I'd be happy to help you find something that could work for both of you. Just e-mail me through the contact at the top of the post.

Good luck to both of you.

A kick can be thunderous and can actually cause slight vibrations in house walls, not to mention reptile enclosures. And a snare drum is the loudest acoustic instrument reaching sonic boom levels for a split second. It's best not to play around anything breathing that isn't willing to take the damage.
