Need help finding good Alligator lizard realese/hunting spot

jrbl Mar 15, 2004 08:08 PM

Hi,
I have recently moved and I need help finding new Alligator lizard stomping grounds. The place I now live is surrounded by farms and orchards. I assume the farms and orchards use pesticides so I doubt any lizards would hang around here with no bugs around. THe farms and orchards seem to keep it pretty sparse under the plants. I know all the tricks about looking under old sheet metal, logs, etc, but I do not see any of that around here. There are some hills out in the distance and a large field across the road. I have a southern alligator lizard I wish to realease and a norther alligator lizard I wish to find a mate for. I plan to breed the northerns and realease the babies in a wildlife refuge near my home. THe refuge has a "teenage" pine/fir forest that would be good habitat for the Northern alligator lizards. I hope to get some ideas from some of you. THank you, Johh

As far as the southern is concerned, you should make every effort to release it at the site you captured it or near there. Releasing it in a new location can lead to things like genetic polution of the resident wild population, especially if it is of a different subspecies.

There are also several different subspecies of northerns, so if you want to have a compatible pair make sure that they are both members of the same one.

You might want to check out this website: www.californiaherps.com
