Worried.

Meb Mar 15, 2004 09:22 PM

Hello.

I just fed my corn because she was spazzing out and acting all weird so I figured she might be hungry because I hadn't fed her in a while because she had gone in a blue phase and I didn't want to feed her until she shed. But she had been clear for a few days and I thought maybe she wouldn't shed for a week so I fed her.

She ate it right up and almost as soon as I put her back in the tank she began rubbing against the walls and anything else and almost immediately began to shed. So now I'm worried that maybe her doing all this right after she just had a meal will stress her out. I know you're not supposed to feed them when in blue stage, is this bad too?

Any comments would be most grateful.

My snakes regularly feed while in the blue phase. Usually because I defrost a mouse before looking in on them, and then I think I'm not wasting it, so wave it in front of their nose so they smell it even if they can't see it. They never turn it down and it never affects their shedding.

I think it can only be a problem if the food leaves a large bulge which makes it hard for them to shed the skin over the bump, that's why it's usually avoided I guess.

Well, she shed with no problem and it all came off in one piece, so I guess she'll be fine.

Thanks for the advice.

Hey Meb

This is only my opinion. Most of my corns eat once a week weather blue or not. When their eyes are clouded they are almost blind but they can still smell. I think once they are settled in and comfortable with the enviroment and on a regular schedule they get used to eating at a certain time and will eat no matter what. As far as the meal affecting their shed, Ive always thought it helps them shed. I may be wrong but in my opinion it stretches the skin and therefore makes it easier to shed. On more than one occasion Ive still seen the lump in the belly of the shedded skin. With some snakes my snow in particular its almost immposible to predict when they are gonna shed. So as a rule I offer a mouse every week, they either eat or do with out. They almost always eat with out a problem.
