rough-skinned newts.. the care?

anemone Mar 15, 2004 09:26 PM

I've had mine for about a year now. I've been taking care of them the way the petstore I got them at told me. I don't think it's all that best of a way though maybe. I have them in about hmm.. probably an 8 galloon. It's half filled with water with one climbing rock/mountain thing to get dry at times. And a few rocks at the bottom that they lay on underwater. They seem to want to swim more than get on land... I've read to feed them bugs, but when I got them they were grownup on newt pellets, which I have been feeding them. I'm planning to get an 10 gallon tank for them. How should the setup be? Any advice on anything?

Sorry to just hand you a pile of links, but most of what you are asking is there. Maybe someone who keeps this species can give you some more personal advice.

Hey,
I've had a difficult time finding a lot of info on my newts, too. I don't know if I'm doing it right, but I'm doing a bit of improvising.
I have 2 rough skinned newts in a 10 gal. aquarium with 5 small guppies (yes, they are food.) The tank is about half full, with some crazy rocks I set up for them to lay on. Mine too seem to prefer to swim than bask. I feed my newties earthworms, small crickets, and occassionally a small guppy.
My guys are so sweet! If I put my fingers in the water, they use their arms and grab my fingers and hoist themselves us into my palm.
Gimme info!
Vanessa

Mine do that also.. they are very very friendly. I've been having trouble finding stuff also, I guess they are not popular, but they're pretty easy to take care of. How do you feed them? Mine are on pellets, which I know are not good. Do you just stick the crickets and worms in the water? Don't they die or do they go right up and eat em?
