Uromastyx scorteccii

saint alphonzo Mar 15, 2004 09:54 PM

Yesterday I received the following book:

Barron´s - Reptile and Amphibian Keeper´s guides
Spiny-tailed Agamids: Uromastyx and Xenagama - R.D. Brtlett

In this book, in the species list, he mentions Uromastyx scorteccii - Scortecci´s Uromastyx.

My questions:

Is this a valid species?
In which scientific paper is the first description of this species published?
Who described the species?
Who can tell me more about this species?

Next to the above mentioned he also described the known species and subspecies in another way as Wilms did.
Does anyone know on which he based this?

Try the following website for information:

http://srs.embl-heidelberg.de:8000/srs5bin/cgi-bin/wgetz?-e [REPTILIA-Species:'Uromastyx_SP_princeps']

So it was, once, a subspecies of princeps. Thanx for the answer.

But where does he get this sudden species-status from?

Total speculation here but-
I am not so certain that this was ever a separate subspecies. It is possible that at one time it was misidentified as a subspecies or 'thought' to be a subspecies for a period of time and maybe the name was changed (dropped) a number of years down the road?
It could be that the author of the book has used sources of information from years ago and thus lists the uromastyx scortecci as a separate species?- I have no idea. I would suggest taking a look at the resources listed by the author and do some digging there.

The problem is that he does not mention much resources.

He does mention this forum in his book. Maybe he visits this forum sometimes, so...

Mr. Bartlett, can you answer my questions.

The work and book of Thomas Wilms is not once mentioned in the book. And I cannot imagine that you can write a book about Uromastyx without taking the Wilms-book serious.
