New Russian Advice Please

tuwhada Mar 15, 2004 09:54 PM

I currently own one russian I have had him for about 9 years and he is pretty big. Well a friend of mine is giving me his russian and what I want to know is if I will be able to house these two russians together. Granted I will quarantine the new one for quite some time and do the whole parasite testing plus I would build a new enclosure. But should I have any concerns after that about putting these too together especially since mine is so big and from what I understand this one is a little small. No idea how old it is or what sex it is.
Any advice
Thanks
Christina

You generally don't want to keep two males together because of fighting. Of course there may be exceptions. And even two males who appear happy together most of the year may turn on each other in the spring.

Beyond that you should try to provide a few hide spots and more than one basking area. And spread the food around at feeding time so one tortoise doesn't dominate. Design the enclosure so that there are rocks/logs/etc. blocking the view, thus allowing the two animals to get away from each other.

Here are some photos to help you determine gender:

And always observe your animals for the first few days at least. Even two females may be incompatible. And a male/female pairing can be a difficult situation for the female due to repeated attempts at mating with all of the biting, ramming, stalking.
