Another Desert Iguana Pic ( sort of)

dvl Mar 15, 2004 10:56 PM

This DI has been moving around underground for a week. There were several " breaks/ cracks " in the thin layer of soil above the unseen tunnel system about 18 inches from this spot in pic. This is the first time for it to be actually visible. I expect him ( or her) to pop out within a day now. I am amazed at how close to the surface it is!! I don't know how extensive or deep this tunnel really is. I have to assume the lizards are fairly deep underground for the coldest spells but move towards the surface to check out the surface temps as time goes by.
I wonder if these tunnels are enlarged constantly during their underground stay or if they are dug out early in the fall season and the lizards move back & forth??

We need to shrink JohnE to the size of a grubworm and send him into the tunnels!!! What do ya'll thoink ( Hi Tom!!) about that idea??

If they were gone, I might consider being shrunk down to the size of a grub worm and checking out those tunnels LOL. I think within the next few years, you will be infesting in a small camera you can insert down into these tunners to photograph eggs, and such. I've been thinking about hooking a web can up to some of my cages, just so I can visit the activity from work LOL

(glad you're thinking about me) LOL

Lets see now-- all the Blues are out front so they can't attack him-- I have plenty of Blues with loads to come in May !! Hi Tom!!-- refers to "thoink"-- a while back you speeled something like that so I was picking up on it . Eve-- John IS a mite-- a mite this and a mite that. That emerging DI only stuck his head out of the hole today-- as far as I can tell it looks like he was content to just look around. As soon as he comes out I will try to get some pics of his tail and compare to the skinny tail of the DI that stayed awake all winter. He will be fine with temps warm enough now he can eat & poo & stuff.

I got to loinking ( Hi Tom) in the tunnel opening he left open & it does get deeper as you get away from where he surfaced. I also found a hole where the other DI must have emerged from yesterday. It goes almost straight down & looks to go at least 4-6 inches down. I will get a flashlight & mirror and check it out better.
