Two questions ..

newkid Mar 15, 2004 11:04 PM

As alot of people Im doing alot of research. This site is fantasic. (because of the people and knowledge) OK done kissing up here

I see what the famous beginner snakes are and such but friends have told me that some snakes when they go to the bathroom will stick up the whole house. My wife would have me moved out for sure. I keep a leopard gecko now and I dont smell her ever. I keep her tank pretty clean tho too. So whats a great beginner with low oder maintenance. (maybe limit my search)

Also Im done with pet stores.. so a cpl breeders that ship and have good reputations please, would also be helpful.

Thanks

speaking for my self..my 2 yearling corns, honduran and Jungle Carpet Python are pretty good...smell wise. My JCP does have a stronger odor but when you clean in up as soon as you can there's no smell.
I don't know about the hugh snakes like berms or boas. I can ony imagine. :0)

that is a cool concern. i don't think that i have had anyone i know of ask about the odor i have had as many as 70 reptiles, mostly snakes, between mine and a buddys in one house with out any noticable smell, spot cleaning weekly and a good scrub down once or twice a month helps keep it down, i have noticed snakes with high metabolism's, like corns do stink and need to be cleand quickly, but i haven't noticed much with pythons and boas, good luck on what ever you decide to go with, let us know

I couldn't give you a thurough answer but here's what I can tell you.

Avoid anything that needs fish or amphibians as a large part of it's diet (water snakes, garters).

Boas and pythons stink more when fed birds (especially ducks) than when fed rodents.

Clean things as soon as possible. (Duh.)

Use absorbent substrate like mulch, paper towels or carfresh. This will dehydrate feces more quickly which cuts down on odor. But, if you use mulch, feed in a separate container or if the snake doesn't tend to drag its food around, put it on a paper towel or paper plate in the cage so they don't ingest the mulch.

That's all I have to say about that...
