Should I or Shouldn't I?

frognovice Mar 15, 2004 11:38 PM

I have a grey tree frog we found on our hot tub last October/November. We took him in and he has a real nice house (see picture below)- has screen now instead of the top until we build a screen spacer. Lots of room, with a coconut hut, branches, and a little pond water dish. He sits on his branches, on top of his hut and on his water dish and seems to be happy. Several times he has spoken with a trill.

My question is whether we should let him go or not when it gets warm. He is a bit spoiled now with crickets coming every couple of days or so and I am worried he might not survive long when he is put back out...but do they get lonely?

thanks

If he hasnt been in contact with any other reptile or amphibian while in your care, I would definately let him go. Don't worry about him not re-adapting to the wild, he'll make the switch faster than you can get back in the house. I know you have gotten attached to him, but he should have the right to return to the wild from whence he came. It's not like he's been cooped up his whole life. If you have become partial to the hobby, however, please don't catch wild frogs. There are plenty of captive bred specimens for you to adopt and care for in the pet trade. You gave him a nice home for the winter, and now he should be let back into the wild.

Hey, I should have a house so nice! I don't know much about frogs, but I'd say that if he's healthy and fit, keep him in there and enjoy him.

Let him make the choice..when it gets warmer..put the cage outside and leave it open..??

AHHH! Bad idea; it could cook with all of that glass around and nowhere to escape the heat. Just let him go, and if he graces you hot tub again in the fall bring him back in.

If you caught him in the wild, I agree, please let him go!! Imagine if you had lived your whole life in, say, an area the size of your state. Then, some scary thing comes up & starts to keep you in a closet......
