Plant Question

Solomon Mar 16, 2004 12:26 AM

Hi,

I'm really thinking on getting into cresteds and just doing my homework before I bring one home. I was curious as to what live plants, most people use? I want to create a naturalistic vivarium. I'm also wondering if a 10 gallon tank, with a screen lid, would be a suitible size as a temporary enclosure for an adult?

Thanks in advance - I'm loving all the pics posted!

Yes a 10 gal tank with a screen will work. I use this setup for two small gargoyles but have a bigger setup for adults. Pothos and many other low light non toxic plants can be used. the ones in the back corners of the tank are even native to New cal. Forgot the name of them but you can get them at home depot.

10 gallon will work, but i think that you could go a bit bigger. they like the height. check out a 13"x19"x21" screen cage (or something close in size). you can find them for $35-40 on the internet. i use pothos, but you can also use ficus benjimina, dracaena, bromeliads, and umbrella plants among others. also, the picture of the setup in the first reply to this post looks good, but in my opinion is lacking in surface area. cork bark is an awesome natural looking material that can be used to increase the surface area in the terrarium.

hope that helps

Thanks for the help! I've got pothos coming out of my ears, and a few other of the mentioned plants kicking around. Is anyone familiar with the names of any native New Cal. plants? Also, what would be a good substrate to use? I've read up that the dry coconut husk is good, I'm currently drying some out, but what other could be used? I'm hoping to someday have a 40 or 50 gallon tall tank to house a 1.3 breeding group.

You could also keep your plants potted, this makes it easier to clean your setup and find eggs. The 10 gal tank was just for very young gargoyles.
