darkling beetles?

jensinger Mar 16, 2004 12:40 AM

Do darkling beetles have any nutritional value? They seem like they're more chitin than anything else. With the right gutload, could they be a part of leopard gecko diet?

I don't imagine them being much nutritionally different... But still, there is too much chitin in them.

If your speaking of the beetle that come from the mealies, forget that, i've never seen a lizard who eat them...and as it was said in the other post, too much chitin.

Really? I would think any lizard would eat it, and I have seen beardeds eat them

Our female has eaten a couple of them. I think any lizard will probably eat them, but their exoskeleton is on the thick side. SO impaction could be a problem. Nutrition wise, I would think they would be similar to the worm. Most of us use powders anyway, so the feeder is simply for protein/fat/fiber.
