Question on screen lids-NEED HELP

dragonlovers Mar 16, 2004 01:01 AM

Hello, we recently began work on our bearded dragon enclosure. It is an old display case that we are converting into their home. It is 72" x 10". Does anyone know where we could locate a screened lid that would fit this size of cage? If not, how would we go about making one ourselves? I read somewhere online that certain screen or mesh can be harmful to the beardies, but it didn't say which. If anyone can help we'd really appreciate it. Thanks and we hope to hear from you soon.

as far as i know...there isn't any harmful screen for a BD. the only thing that can be harmful is if they come into contact with it and they get their claws caught then ripped out. as long as it's a screen top you should have any probl;ems with any screens. i would just go buy a roll of the metal (not fiberglass) window screen from home depot or lowes. it's cheap and works great as long as they can't get up to it and climb on it.

i would reccomned a screen top for a beardie, although beardies are desert dwellers they benefit greatly from a little humidity as long as your temps are correct. i would suggest at least a half covered top or a fully covered top with small vent. all my tops are covered and my beardies have never looked better.i also do this for all my other reptiles too.

an all screen top easily creates a bone dry enclosure...which isn't good for them and retaining water in their systems.

just my opinions and thoughts, no need to change any thing.

hope this helps

Never had a beardie but;

I figure their nails aren't that thick, meaning if they got to the screen they could easily get caught. I use and suggest a wire mesh with roughly 3/8 inch sqaure holes. It's about $25 for a large roll at Home depot.

Make a wood frame to fit around the top edge of your encloser. Attach the screen to the top of the frame. The screen will actually rest on the top edge of your enclosure. Then take thin plywood and squarely cover the section of the screened frame you wish. If you have an air brad nailer this will work so fast it's fun. If you don't have one, get a small 30 gallon compressor. Your entire life will change if you're a do it yourselfer. Trust me, air is the way!

This will help keep in moisture and strengthen the frame and screen. It will also add weight to the lid so your animal can not get out.

Hope this helped' let me know.
