Easterns sneazing?

c&f Mar 16, 2004 08:41 AM

Hi; I have 2 orange banded Easterns, both males and they seem to be sneazing, or expelling air through their nostrils. The smaller one developed some clear nasal discharge and is now on amikacin, but the other seems fine. They are kept on newspaper and towels, and both have 1 hide box full of aspen, and 1 full of cypress. Both have under tank heaters and are in a room that is between 75night/82day.

Question: Is this just something these guys do, or could it be bedding related? I have a number of snakes with similar setups and no problems at all, but i'm relatively new to Kings and their the only ones doing this.

Thank you!

Hey Freight,

I would try removing the wood substrate from the hides. Some snakes are allergic to such and or can further irritate a sinus problem. Also kick your temps up a bit getting the warm side up to 85-87 degree's just make sure your cool side doesnt get much over 80. The Amakacin works well but I would have done both snakes if they are both sneezing even if only one has the discharge.

I'll dump the substrate and see how things go from there. Its a funny thing that I use essentially the same setup for many of my snakes, but these orange easterns seem to be having a problem with it. The thing that really stinks is that they love to dig!

They actually do have hot spots to warm up on, I was more referring to my general ambient temps in this room. I didn't medicate both of them because they don't live together, and the one I got from Pennsylvania turned out to be a rehab and just got off meds recently. This guy was sold to me covered in lesions, skinny, and with a swolen vent, and now a few months later has grown at least 6 inches, and is at least 3 times as thick on a normal diet!

Thanx for getting back to me Keith! Other than the sneezing the little guy is coming along nicely!
