Mama Carpet decided that early this morning was prime for egg-laying. Sixteen beautiful eggs! I've been on pins and needles for days, as mama is a bit overdue by most texts on the subject (this is day 42 of showing gravid colors). She never completely stopped eating, just tapered off to maybe one or two crickets per day, and got up to a hefty 24g (from 18g, pre-breeding weight). She is CH and seems entirely unphased by the whole gravid experience. Interestingly, a recently acquired WC lateralis female dropped eggs this week (only 5, no attempt to bury them). What a huge difference between the WC and CH gravid females (colors, attitude, behavior, eating habits, etc).
I am trying to post pictures of my Mom and Dad Carpets but KS is being cantankerous. Mom is "Vermicelli Ocelli" and Dad is "Rigatoni", or 'Toni' for short because he is such a tough guy. Once recovered, Vermicelli will visit "Orzo", a much more mellow fellow with unusual coloring. Hopefully pictures of my lateralis family will be posted soon. (Don't crack a rib laughing too hard at the names...I have enough critters now that I had to move beyond "New Carpet" and "Old Carpet", "New Female", "Newer Female", "Middle Female", etc.
