Internation Shipping question

tuwhada Mar 16, 2004 10:38 AM

I am supposed to be receiving a tortoise from another county and the person I am dealing with seems pretty trust worthy however I am just wondering how all this works. He states that the tortoise will be sent via USPS and that it will take about 4 days. How does this turtle live etc??? (obviously I have never shipped before) He said to trust him b/c he has been doing this for about 2 years so I do but I just want to know at this point. Plus when I get the tortoise is there anything special I need to do after he has been shipped for that long.
Thanks
Christina

First off if you are in the US you can not just receive an animal shipped in from another country. You MUST go through the entire Importation process. If you do not follow the international and federal regulations you will be violating international and federal laws and will in fact be smuggling and illegally importing wildlife which could subject you to 10 years in prison and up to a $500,000.00 fine. Obviously this person is not shipping legally as they would know they can not ship internationally through the USPS and if the package is going to take 4 days to arrive then they need to ship a faster route as that is not safe for the animal and violates regulations regarding shipping live animals. If I were you I (and you do reside in the US) would contact the USF&W before you get yourself into trouble and subject yourself to jail time and steep penalties. If by chance you live in Canada there are regulations as well that are required to be done to import legally and have steep penalties for not abiding by them. I am sorry if this is BRUNT but to be honest all Illegal importation and trade needs to be STOPPED. It pisses me off that people think they can just order an animal from another country like they were ordering within the US. If it was that easy why would there be Importers of animals? If it were that easy everyone would be buying direct from the origin countries.

I am sorry if I piss you off. I am pretty ignorant of this. I would like to let you know that I am getting a captive bred animal from there and that I am not stealing animals from the wild, I am morally opposed to that.
This person I am dealing with apprently sends to stores all the time and he said not to worry about anything is it possible that he is doing it under a license he currently has or maybe he is taking care of it, or is this something that I need to take care of.
Thanks

To be blunt you should have research ahead of time one what was needed to legally import before you got this far in the deal. It does not matter if the animal is c.b. or W/C the importation process is still the same. YOU must be licensed through USF&W, YOU must fill out importation documents, You must have a Broker, YOU must ensure that he is sending legal CITES documents. And so you know this is just as bad and illegal as exportation of animals taken from the WILD. It is still smuggling and illegal importation. Of course he told you not to worry about it. Just becuase he has sent to others and not gotten caught does not make it legal or moral. It is 100% illegal. Let me guess it is a star tortoise (or another species) that is coming out of Singapore?
