A Couple of Pics--New River Tinc

Homer1 Jun 11, 2003 05:20 PM

Hey everyone, the forum has been a little light on pics lately, so I thought I would fill up some bandwidth here. After about 3 weeks in the 50 gallon tank, my 5 month old New River Tinc has warmed up to the surroundings, and is putting on some shows during feeding time. While my camera is still pretty crumby, I thought I'd post a few pics. I'm really amazed at the color change that has occurred as this frog has aged . . . it has gotten much darker blue in color (although you can't see it in the photos so well). Anyway, without further ado . . .

Hey Homer, is that a jewel orchid over there on the right? If so, what kind of substrate are you using? Thanks

Thanks for the compliment. I bought my New Rivers from Quality Captives (www.qualitycaptives.com) at the Indy Reptile Show. They're great people, and I love the frogs. It was either these or some azureus, but I liked the fact that these run a little cheaper, get larger, and have a more reticulated pattern (typically with a little darker color . . . or so it seems to me). I don't know where you live, but you might want to check them out if you're in the market for some of these.

Good Luck,

Yes, it is a Jewel Orchid . . . a little bitty one at that! I split the one I bought when it arrived and placed them in different parts of the terrarium, hoping to place them in different lighting positions to see which one fared better. Both are in a mixture of washed coconut husk chips (1/2" and 1/4" and horticultural charcoal. They seem to be doing well enough, but they certainly aren't growing like mad (as opposed to my Nepenthes which is growing like a weed). I've read that Jewel Orchids like more earthy and nutrient filled substrates, but I figured that I would try this out . . . so far, so good.

Well they sure do compliment an already great looking viv! Kudos and keep up the good work. I plan on getting some of these orchids in the near future, I love those leaf patterns!

Thanks, Randy! I'm just waiting for everything to grow in now, and crossing my fingers hoping I get a pair out of my frogs.

What a lens-louse that frog is! The poses are wonderful.

Like most orchids, the jewel orchid is a pretty heavy feeder so it's frustrating to meet the requirements in a vivarium. In an earthy situation, mine grew enthusiastically for awhile, then rotted off at the base from being too damp all the time, so I trimmed all the rot away and restarted it in a cocos mix similar to yours. It has put out new roots and is surviving, but not growing very fast. The leaves are so nice, I'm content to have it small. It's worth having, even without the blooms. I've considered selectively spraying or wiping the leaves with a liquid orchid fertilizer, but don't want to chance any contact with the frogs.

I'm with you, Patty. I don't care if this thing ever blooms . . . it's a foliage plant for me. I picked the coco chips because they drain well while retaining some moisture. While it is tempting to add some fertilizer, I've just been too chicken to do it . . . I'd rather lose the plant than my frogs. Maybe someday I'll try a fish emulsion or liquid kelp, but I doubt it. I kind of like the cute little size it has, and the red color with black and gold is great. Heck, I only paid $5 for it, so I could easily replace it if it decides to kick the bucket. However, I think it will hold on indefinitely, although it might not thrive, in this setup.

Well, I have two . . . and they're both different colors because they are different in age. When first bought, all of mine have been either VERY light blue or a pearlescent white. As they age, their coloration begins to turn to a darker blue. I understand that the coloration varies somewhat as to the darkness of the blue, but my oldest one is a rather dark blue . . . most closely resembling the pics you'll see at A.J. Calisi's site (T&C Terrariums--www.fantasticfrogs.com). The younger one is two months younger, and it's still rather whitish with the blue coloration just starting to form. I also supplement my flies with paprika, so I don't know if that might make a difference (I don't see how much it could change things, since carotenes are orange).

If you are getting yours from Quality Captives, you'll probably end up with a rather dark blue frog . . . mine aren't quite as dark as the one's on Calisi's website, but seem to get darker as time goes on.

Homer,

Your tank looks awesome. Great job!!!

Thanks, Melissa! It wouldn't be nearly as cool without the terrific frogs you guys hooked me up with! My oldest one is doing great in the 50 gallon . . . it knows his scheduled feeding time and hangs out in the front of the tank from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. hunting any possible leftover flies, springtails, whatever (it's amazing how much they eat and how quickly they grow!).

Hopefully I'll make it to the Indy Show this month . . . weddings have been getting in the way of my froggin' this summer!

We will have quite a few frogs at this month's show and we look forward to seeing you.

Let us know if there is anything that you think your need.

Everyone always asks us, "how do you tell the difference between the Azureus & New Rivers when they morph out"? Color - is always my answer.

As Homer has said, they frogs get darker as they age. When they first morph, they New Rivers have a yellow/white coloration on their backs. As the frogs age, the colors get darker.

I think for some this is a little upsetting, but it is another instance where you get to see your frog change into a beautiful animal.
