a question about good tubs to use in a rack for breeding rats and then mice.

theanimalman Jun 11, 2003 05:34 PM

what brand of tubs are in the picture on the main feeder page?
i built a rack for rats and used sterilite tubs. well needless to say the rats chewed right through the sides of them where there was a raised corner.
what are some good tubs to use for rats and then also for mice.
thanks chris

My tubs are Freedom Breeder. They are not cheap, but rats won't chew through them.

Looks great. Where did you get the stuff for the watering system.

I use cement mixing tubs from Home depot. Cost me $3.90 per tub. (pic below) For mice I used cat letter boxes. I got some "Dosikal" brand on-line for 2.60 per box. I don't have a pic of that rack yet, but I have used the dosikal litter box for one tank of mice for about 4 months now and have not had a problem with the box at all. Thats why I used those boxes for the new mouse rack I bought.

Chris,
I think the best thing to use for mice when using a rack system is cat litter pans. They have no raised edges on the inside for mice to chew on. Use the medium size pan (16" x 12" x 4" deep)- anything deeper may cause problems for the mice to reach the food on the screen (hardware cloth) above. I get mine from www.dresslersdog.com and pay about $1.50 each.
You can keep 1:3 or 1:4 mice in these.

Has anyone kept 1:5 or more in this size pan without problems or low production??

Hope this helps.

neodesha mouse racks with no problems. Once the females get on a cycle, they work well together.

I love the neo set up. I have a chance to get some for 75 per level.

I have one colony in a ten gallon tank temporarily until I get their tub replaced, one of those chewing accidents The chewed through the flat side of a sterlite tub!

Anyway, I have seen my mice jump from the center bottom of the tank and grab hold of the screen cover. They seem to do it with ease, even the pregnant females. I was sort of startled by the sound of the tiny feet and claws moving across the screen

Just my experience!

I still haven't taken pictures since the watering system was added, so just imagine one.

I have usewd sterilite tubs for about a year now. I had 1 group that tried to chew thru the top, but not the tub, so far at least. I don't think the group that tried to chew thru the top will be able to chew thru the freezer. Thanks for the heads up, I keep an eye on them.

I put my male rat in with the 3 females. About the time it became obvious that only one had conceived the other two, my oldest and most tame, chewed a hole through the bottom of the tub, and just in one night, and then proceeded to play hide and seek with me making me late for work

I now have them in a 30-long until I can replace the tub with one that doesn't have the ridges! I just couldn't put them in the freezer and none of my snakes can take a full grown rat! I couldn't freeze the mice that chewed through the flat side of their tub either, just too nice a group

thanks everyone for all the info and experience shared. it looks like cat litter pans or cement mixing tubs are the way to go for mice or rats. especially when looking at the prices. i'll have to post a picture of the setup i have now. thanks again, chris
