I have an idea to improve Prehensile Tailed Skinks enclosures

jrbl Mar 16, 2004 09:35 PM

Hi,
If this sounds really stupid, just let me know.
Well all people who keep of have kept PTS know very well that plants don't last very long in their enclosures. I may have just solved this problem! Do you know those special planter/pots that are made for strawberries? Well I thought, I could put one of those in a PTS enclusre and fill it with plants(mostly pothos). I would first use some home made "plant pockets" that would fit perfectly in the little holes in the strawbery pot, and fill the "plant pockets" with, what else, plants. When a plant has been throughlly thrashed, I would just pull out the "plant pocket it is in, and replace it with another. I would then take to thrashed plant and place it in my green house, and let it regrow. Note: for those of us who do not have greenhouses, you could simply set up a small terrarium and grow the plants in there. After the plant regrows, I would put it back in the strawberry pot to replace another thrashed plant. I am not sure how well this will work, but I plan to test it out. I bought a large quantity of pothos plants off of ebay for this purpose for like $10. Again, if this idea is just really stupid, just tell me. Josh

When my Leonardo destroys a pothos plant vase, i put the vase outdoors and wait for the plant to regrow. As he eats the pothos plants faster than the plant regrows, i have several pothos plant vases and im still buying more!
I noticed that pothos dont need soil to grow, only water is enough, that " discovery" made even easier to feed my sweet Leonardo.Sometimes he even preferes to take a bath inside the pothos plant bowl of water than to soak inside his own and clean bowl of water!

But im afraid Leonardo wont eat anything else and will starve to death if i stop giving him pothos! But i admit i dont feel confortable when i see him drinking and soaking in the pothos plant water!Yack!

LEEWAY CORUCIA RESEARCH CENTER (LCRC)

Hi Flavia,

You could just give your guys leaves removed from Pothos plants on their dinner planter if you decided not to go live plants in the cage.

I'm glad Rafael is doing better. I hope you can get him evaluated for possible treatment.

Good Luck.

Very Good OR....

There are very realistic artificals out there that would last-and be cost effect over the long run. Besides, One can see what is being eaten at what time and quantity better if the Pothos were introduced at feeding time. Also, one does not have to be concerned that their soil is going to become a breeding ground for nematodes and other nasty little critters. I'm not knocking live plant use-just presenting an alternative.

Best Regards,
Jean

these are all artificial plants- most prefer to hide under these instead of the bare wood hides. The favorite spot is under a 1/2 wood round with a pile of artificial plants on the top.

I have 2-3 very large pothos plants that get rotated through the PTS enclosures. I mostly put one in when I have run out greens salad and can't get to the store that day, or when we leave for a day or two and won't be able to put fresh food in/take day old food out. It can serve as a living salad bar for the whole family for about 2 days before it is so trashed I have to remove it to the 'plant hospital' to recuperate for weeks to months....
I use fresh mulberry branches in a similar manner (living salad bar)- cut them down and put them in a heavy vase with water. They get mulberry branches as a staple all summer long. In the spring when the leaves are young and tender- the PTS absolutely gorge themselves on mulberry- they LOVE it. Plus it is free!
Cheers, jess b

Also a good post. Great idea on Mulberry delivery Jess. I didn't intend to knock the Live plant users out there.

Best Regards,
Jean
