Eating problems?

srsnakes Mar 16, 2004 09:51 PM

Hey everyone im new to this forum, but i want to thank everyone for the advice which has already been posted on this forum. Anyways sooo i have two baby Argentine Red Tegus which i purchases a few weeks ago and im having problems getting them to eat their fruit... They really like there crickets and ground beef It seems that one of them is a better eater than the other.. Mr Snufflupagus is a great eater but always leaves my little guy tuck in the tracks. We started feeding them in different cages (since they are small they share a large tank for the time being, steve and i are planning to make custom cages for them to move into). Anyways i feed them 5-6 days a week and i am just wondering if there is something else to try for them other than the ground beef and the crickets.. I have tried mealworms, high quality dog foods, blending the meat with fruit, ummmm i think that might be it but i was looking for some more stuff to offer them.. any help would be appreshiated... thank you for your help... let me know what you think of my little guys..

Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind & Steven Aguilar

Tuck is the one of the lower left and Mr Snuffles is the one on the top right

Tuck is in the foreground and Mr Snuffles is in the background

Any comments would be appreshiated!!!

Very handsome tegus, beautiful red color.

STAY AWAY FROM DOG FOOD
STAY AWAY FROM MEAT
THESE ARE TO HIGH IN FAT CONTENT

you can try 93% fat free ground turkey mixed with fruit and veggies. You can even mix in juvie dragon pellets. Roaches are a great source of protien as are mice and when they are bigger, rats. If you want to try fruit alone, banannas, oranges, mango, grapes, avacodo all work great. My adults will swallow bannanas whole.

Ahh thank you for the help.. I have only been tring fruits like oranges and Kewis which is what the store had told me to feed them, but i could only get them to eat ground beef and crickets... where can i order some roaches from, im in southern cali and right near LLL Reptiles and Presitoric Pets, plus a few little pet stores around but i was wondering if there would be something i could order for them. I was going to try the ZooMed Tegu formula which is a small meat chuck substance looking stuff, but i havent thought of the juvie Bearded Dragon formula. I will get them some bananas tonight and i just wanted to thank you for your help and also complement you on your beautiful male red... He's is just adorable. I can't wait til mine are that big!!!Ahhhhh how is the temperment on the big guy, we handle ours every single day in order to keep them calm and well tempered due to the fact that steve and i want to be able to take them to shows when they are bigger although they arent found of the lease yet, they are getting better. Anyways thank you for all your advice, if there is anything else you can think of i would love to give them a try...Thank you!

Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind
