beginner species advice?

ginger7456 Mar 16, 2004 11:12 PM

Hi everyone, I have recently become interested in keeping frogs, and I am really intrigued by dart frogs. Does anyone have any advice they would like to dish out about a good beginner species. I have experience keeping numerous species of geckos and quite a few large snakes but this will be a first for frogs. I am torn between the dart frogs and the red eyed tree frogs any input on that would be great. Pros and cons about the two are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance for any input

The biggest con, in my opinion, of having RETF is they are nocturnal.
THe biggest con, in my opinion, of having dart frogs is their culturing their food.

As for a starter species, I'd suggest D. auratus (green and black poison dart frog)...

hope this helped,
Ben

Definitely NOT Auratus. Although in my opinion, one of the most beautiful of all frogs with their dazzling metallic green, blues, and bronzes, as well as cheap and hardy, they are very shy and you will quickly get bored with them. The blue morph is especially shy.

Good ones to start out with:

D. tinctorius - bold, hardy, and colorful. Many tincs have gone down in price, and you can find cobalts at around $35-50.
D. azureus- similar to tincs, just more pricey, around $60. Tolerates cooler conditions
E. tricolor- cheap, enjoys cooler conditions, hardy and very long lived, bold and prolific, and eats larger food items.
D. leucomelas- likes it warmer, but bold and hardy
P. terribilis- not shy at all, as they are the most poisonous creature on the planet! Will eat larger food items, pretty cheap too.
