mealworm question..

jensinger Mar 17, 2004 05:11 AM

I've read a lot of care sheets as well as information and research pages about mealworms and darkling beetles, but I can't see to find precise information regarding the egg laying stage.
How long should mealworms be left in the egg container before being removed? I've read that they will eat eggs, and I think that's what I'm experiencing with my own colony. About how long should the group of beetles be left to mate and lay eggs?

http://www.leoloverslizardlounge.com/mealworms.htm has the best information about mealworms breeding. I always go there to check up that i'm doing everything right lol. That particular page is about breeding mealworms and states that you should change out the bedding in the beetle box about every 2-3 weeks. That bedding then goes into the baby mealworm box. What i then do is once the baby worms become large enough, i move them up one bin to the *feeder* bin but involves picking them out one at a time so i don't remove any eggs that are still in the baby box.

Hope that helps

What I do is remove my beetles once I notice little mealworms in the bottom of the container. How are your colonies set up(i.e. food type, temps.,breeding container). My set up involves using a small rubbermaid container(slightly smaller than a shoebox) and starting with the bottom use 1/2" cornmeal(not only great food source but good egg laying medium),then sprinkle dry powered milk on that, finally top off with 1" to 2" rolled oats.I then put sliced potatoes on a jar lid so to keep it off the oats and to keep the oats from molding. The whole setup is placed in a warm room in the house and checked so often replacing the potatoes.Once you have baby mealies start all over again in another container. This process has given me thousands of mealworms to supply my leopard geckos and friends of mine.Hope this helps!
