Wood pellets as substrate for Rats/Mice?

wallyworld Mar 17, 2004 07:26 AM

I went to pickup some rabbit pellets for substrate the other day and then they started throwing sizes at me like rabbit 16, etc. I told them what I wanted to use it for and they suggested using wood pellets. Anyone using those? They are about 20% cheaper than the rabbit pellets.

Thanks.

I have never used wood pellets, try them and let us know how they work. As far as Rabbit 16 etc. those were probably just the protein percents. For bedding it does not matter. Probably the lower numbers are cheaper though. Craig Kade

Thanks for the response. I will let you know. They were $3.95 for 30lbs vs. $8.xx for 50lbs of rat pellets making them slightly cheaper if my math is right (20%).

I just didn't know if there were oils or something that would be an issue.

Thanks again

I use a product called Woody Pet for my mice and i love it.... you only need a little bit because it swells as it absorbs and i only clean my mice every 2 weeks.... it dont work that well with rats though, it tends to stick to their tails and rats are dirtier anyway....
