Dropsy help

Last night my ADF was floating upside down at the top of the tank, I thought he was dead, but when my husband went to get him out he started swimming (upside down). I searched the internet and it appears he has dropsy. The only thing I've found is to pierce him with a needle, is that all I can do or is there anything else I can do to help him? This morning he is still floating upside down, and swims if we put the net in. I feel so bad for the little guy, please help. He is in a 2gal. tank by himself. Thanks.
