a bunch of shelf liner questions

lucille Mar 17, 2004 10:43 AM

I like the idea of shelf liner. Here are some questions:
Does the heat from basking lights release anything harmful from the liners?
Do you just wash it by hand and dry it or just use it and throw it away?
Do you use it for other reptiles such as snakes?
And (I know, this is so shallow what color do y'all like?

The only time i've noticed an odor was when first purchased. After an initial wash i've never noticed any odor even when the lamps are on it. I'm sure if you set the lamp super close though you might melt the rubber, but then you would also be melting your BD if your lights were close enough.

For washing I just use antibacterial soap and a sponge. I've found it very easy to wash in the shower since it sticks against the tile wall and can be scrubbed without having to kneel down or bend over.

I like the tan color, since it is the most natural looking.

I don't see why you couldn't use it for any reptile that does not need to burrow.

I've used it for over a year and a half so far without any problems at all. I spot clean the poop daily, and any spots I hit with a cage cleaner I bought that comes in a spray bottle and is safe to use in the cages, I spray with water from a water bottle and use paper towels to wipe up everything. To clean any dry pellets the dragons picked out of their salad or any stray greens, or cricket poop I use a dust pan and brush. Every other week or so when needed I switch them out with a fresh piece (new pattern, color LOL) and soak and disinfect the used liners. Make sure if you use any strong disinfecting cleaning agents you rinse real, real well, and hang the old to air dry. Have a fresh dry or new piece to put in the cage. quick drying or putting in a damp liner is a bad idea as some of the cleaning agents can be trapped inside the liner and released as it fully dries under the basking lights inside the cage. I hang dry mine on hangers in the closet, and they are there dry and nice and straight to be used when needed again, and they had time to fully air dry. Color or pattern hehe I really don't care as it looks better then poop and dry salad stuck on the cage carpet or mixed in with the sand. My cages have had plaid, flowers, solid colors, stripes, marble, Ivy, and even palm trees. I guess I'm not the one to ask which color or patterns to use LOL. As long as their is no poop, dried pellets or greens all over my cages I really couldn't care less what color it was LOL

"Does the heat from basking lights release anything harmful from the liners?"

No one knows for sure the answer to the question and whether the use of this product would have long term effects on a dragon. I can think of safer although less efficient forms of substrate...newprint being one. If it helps, I called the duck brand hotline to see what they thought and the woman I spoke to recommended against keeping a live creature on the product. Here is the number if anyone else is interested:

Again, I'm not saying it will be bad for your dragon, I'm just sharing info I came across when making the decision to possibly switch to this product. Considering what I found, I decided against it.

i have used it for the short time i have had beardies and i like it. just make sure that it fits excatly into the tank, otherwise those pesky crix find a way to crawl under the edge and hide. for my corn snake, still young, i use aspen, i like it b/c she can burrow through it real easy and hide as much a she wants all day long.
