Fire skinks cohabing question

Asmodea Mar 17, 2004 05:55 PM

More important question first... What is the greatest size difference you would concider safe in fire skinks? Specificly, would a 3" svl fire skink be ok with a 5" svl skink, and not get mistaken for food?

Secondly, I have a moderalty ambishous (sp) idea for a tank improvement, that would more than double the current encloser size. How many fire skinks do you think would be able to get along in a 10' square floor size? 7' x 1.5' specificly, with dirt most the entire length to burrow in as they see fit.

I personally wouldn't place skinks together with that much difference in size. Even amongst a group of similar sized juvies I've had injuries occur, so a smaller individual would be at a serious disadvantage, maybe even a meal to the larger one.

As far as your giant enclosure plan goes, I can't even imagine how many you could house. Without knowing the specific territorial needs of the specie, I can't say for sure. I would guess that it might be possible to keep two males and their respective breeding groups together, but fights will likely still occur. I'd sure like to see the finished enclosure though!
