how often do you allow a female to breed?

rayquaza Mar 17, 2004 07:29 PM

do you let them rest between litters for a specific amount of time or do you just let nature take its course and leave the colony alone? I keep two colonies of 1.2 each but I have one females who has one litter after another. Should I pull the male out and let her rest or should I pull her out? she just had 11 babies two days ago and my son said he saw the male mounting her already. Any halp here would be great...Thanx

6-7 litters of babies out of each before they go in the freezer.
Hope that helps.

If you are wanting the most production then I would just let them breed on their own which is usually every 25 days or so. Make sure the diet is good so the females can keep up with the milk for the babies and also the developing litter on the way. I raised rats before and I always kept the males with the females. I kept track how old each rat was and when they had babies and how many. Usually after 1 yr old then I started changing them out so you always have a constant supply of coming in. It worked good for me.

I run mine back to back. Once they reach a certain age, it is tmie to kill them off.
