Cricket & Mealworm gut-loading Recipe
This is a recipe that we gleaned from http://www.drgecko.com/insectdiet.htm
and from our own experience, as well as advice from our local herpvet:
Dry mix:
4 cups powdered whole milk
4 cups infant rice cereal
1 cup whole uncooked natural oats (NOT INSTANT)
1 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup fine crushed sunflower seeds or mixed unsalted nuts
1/2 cup dried and fine crushed kelp
1/2 tsp of powdered royal jelly
Mix & store in air tight container, in a dry place. Keep away from sunlight & moisture.
Wet mix:
Make sure all your produce is organic and that no pesticides have been used.
1 organic small egg, scrambled
1 small organic sweet potato or yam, skinned & steamed till soft.
1 organic small carrot, skinned & steamed till soft
3 organic baby mustard greens, chopped
3 organic spinach greens, chopped
1/2 cup organic field greens, chopped
Cook and scramble egg mix in with steamed, pulverized sweet potato/yam, carrot. Mash in greens.
Store left overs in air tight container overnight. Keep no longer than 2 days. Make as needed!
For crickets: Mix equal portions of dry and wet and feed like normal.
For mealworms: Take selected feeders a day before and put them in their own container with the combined mix. The mixture should be more dry than wet! If to wet, add more dry.
Cat's Cricket Treat (Offer every 3 days):
(I firmly believe that happy crickets make better food!)
1 slice of blood orange or orange, juiced & pulped
1/2 tsp of honey
pinch of powdered royal jelly
5 chopped grapes
Juice orange slice into small container, scrape pulp. Mix with chopped grapes, honey & powdered royal jelly. Mash with back of spoon.
