Any updates on Piebald Honduran?

blueharlequin Mar 18, 2004 12:35 AM

This should probably be directed at Terry, I suppose.. but I was just curious as to the status of the piebald Honduran discussed in the Hondo article in Reptiles magazine some time ago.

Hi Paul,

Her distinguishing characteristic is white piebalding ONLY in the black rings, creating white rings that split each black one. It's a dramatic effect, and one that will be equally interesting on hypos and anerythristics, and thus on ghosts, too. She's a "red tangerine" so it will be interesting to see how tricolors look as well.

All of which, of course, depends on breeding success. She laid slugs in '03. Her owner has put her on breeder loan with me for this year. She eats well, but is shedding every 17 days or so: I've had fecal and blood tests done and nothing is out of line. (anybody have any ideas about treating frequent sheds if the tests show nothing abnormal?)

She's had two sheds since brumation, and normally i breed my hondurans at that stage. But the others will have their second sheds at about the same time she has her third; she's not showing any evidence yet of ovulating, so i'm going to wait to breed her til after her third shed, at the same time the others are breeding.

I did get babies in '03 from the alleged "sib to calico" female i bought that was part of the same group. I'll breed her again this year. And my pair of alleged "hets" from the calico are big enough to try breeding this year. (I say "alleged" because we can't get confirmation of any of the facts about this group of animals). Our hope is to get some babies from the calico this year, as they'd be the first animals we'd know for a fact to be related to her.

So the project moves forward, though slowly.

peace
terry

Hey Terry,
Thanks a ton for the detailed update. I hadn't really heard anything since I read that article of your's when it was published and was curious, as I'm sure others probably were as well.
Thanks again, and best of luck with her.
