I am getting back into snakes after a long hiatus ...

Da Truth Mar 18, 2004 07:15 AM

And I am currently breeding rats for my nile monitor. I am producing way more rats than I will ever need for him, so I want to get a snake to take some of them off of my hands.

I was thinking about a bull snake, but some websites say to almost strictly feed them mice until they are adults. I am just wondering, should I keep looking into this snake, or should I move on to something more capable of eating rats. If youi have any suggestions on a new aquisition, that would be great also.

One thing im not looking for is an overly agressive snake, and i know blood pythons get a bad rap. I already had a retic and I don't need to go THAT big again.

Thanks for the help.

Most of the experienced breeders recommend getting bullsnakes on rats as soon as possible.

We start feeding rat pups as soon as they are about 4 months old. As we believe they do better on them.

These guys are flat out awesome, and I wanted one ever since i played around with a 6 footer at a local pet shop. It was gray and tan, but non-the-less awesome. relatively friendly considering it was WC. I think I will be getting on of these guys. I Have plenty of options to keep it in, and food is basically unlimited. I do have a question about how hungry they are when it comes to feeding. I need this guy to put down some descent amount of food. Hell, I might even get 2, I dunno yet. I am just currious as to how big of an eater they are, and how big is their feeding response.

Thanks for all the help.

Just a hint. Baby snakes put down a lot more rodents numberwise than an adult. It's really easy to keep your rat population down when you are freezing entire litters when they're only a few days old. A couple small bullsnakes could take care of anywhere from 4-10 pinky rats a week.

I used to have the quote below that you used from Kauffeld on my wall as a daily reminder to smell the roses in my daily quest. Thanks for reminding me of it. I am putting it back on the wall tonight.

Thanks,

My favorite quote from Mr. Kauffeld goes something like "Taking a shower is by necessity a lonely experience." I might have a word or two wrong there, but you get the idea.

Anyone else remember what that was in reference to?

KJUN:
I believe in that quote he was referring to Hylas that resided in a rustic campground shower stall that he was using. They would retreat when the water temp. was too high.
