Paddletail Newt Eat Fish?

tms428 Mar 18, 2004 10:13 AM

I have a 55 gallon fw community tank and purchased a paddletail newt about a year ago. Everything I've read about this critter says that they are docile. Just recently mine has started eating my fish. It started with a few small ones but has now started attacking huge angel fish and other extremly larger fish. What once use to be a docile and shy critter seams to have become a hunter in my tank. It no longer hides instead it sits in shrubbery waiting to ambush fish that go there for cover. Is this normal behavior? What could I do to appease his new taste for fish? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

I am relatively new to the herp world, but I have read this forum and Caudata.org extensively the last several months. Everything I'VE read seems to indicate that Paddletails are not peaceful, not compatible with other newt species or fish, and not even compatible with their own species sometimes--esp. more than one male. I would say your guy has found a new sport. He definitely needs his own tank! Most newts will eat anything that moves, if they can.....
