Eye Problems...

girliegirl Mar 18, 2004 01:31 PM

Hi Everyone!

Albert has an eye problem. His eye is slightly swollen and it's pretty much closed w/clear goo coming out. I warmed up some saline solution, wiped the eye w/a q-tip and dripped two drops of the solution into the eye hoping it was sand in his eye. The eye opened immediately, but the next day was closed again...I took this as defeat since I did it for 3 days. I then tried an eye ointment that is supposed to reduce inflamtion and reduce itches for when you scratch your eyeball. This didn't work either. I'm getting really worried now. He has had several other problems since I "rescued" him in May (that have been treated), but this is the only one that has prevented him from eating. Should I take him to the vet?? Thought that I would talk to you guys first, since you are great w/advice and home remedies. He has had the swollen eye for 5 days.

Any ideas what it could be or what I should try?

Thanks tons!!
Carrie

Maybe you already have...is remove the sand while treating. This really stinks to do, but it helps keep more stuff from getting in. When it is bothering them, they always rub in on the ground, rocks, whatever is close by. The same treatment may work. If not, you may need some antibiotics to treat an infection that could spread to the other.

I already removed the sand. I was scared he would get more in it. I will take him to the vet and see what he says. I hope it's nothing serious.

Thanks again for the advice...I REALLY appreciate it!

If you're lucky, he'll just charge you for the meds, and not a rediculous office visit fee as well.

It really doesn't sound too serious.

I don't have any collareds at all (about to get a few though), but I do keep lots of chameleons, and a great thing for their eye problems is something called Terramycin. You can get it at feed stores, and they use it in the eyes of cattle. Sounds kinda sick, but it works great for all sorts of eye problems. It also works good on their lips, if there's a sore or a small bump or scrape. I would assume it shouldn't be swallowed, but besides that, give it a shot. I've used it alot with results almost overnight.

P.S. I'm gonna be laying low in here absorbing all the info I can for a while.... Just ignore me LOL.

Ya have to talk with us ! We insist ! hehhehe

Nice to have you, ahhh you will love collareds. They are very cool little lizards.

I really love chameleons also, beautiful lizards !

To busy with my collareds, and other lizards right now. But one day, I'd love to invest in a pair of Panthers!

I also love the veilds, but hear they are aggressive, that bums me out, as I love to handle my lizards.

Anyway you sure don't have to sit quiet, join in with everybody, they are a GREAT bunch, when they are all here !!!

Plus you give good info, on eye care, Glad to have you !!!

Thanks Eve. I've had collareds before that I caught about 8-10 years ago. I've also had lots of leopard lizards, but that was all before any good info was out really (before I knew how to get it anyways), and the internet was still kinda prehistoric (only 8 years ago... Weird). Something about them has drawn me back lately... Yep, those veileds can be agressive.... Panthers are calm though usually, and their colors are amazing. I'm still not positive if I'm gonna end up getting collareds again. I'm looking for BLUE collareds... Don't really know where to look. Also, I'm looking for something I don't need to worry about de-parasiting (even though I'll do a few fecals anyways). I don't need to introduce that to my collection. I'm still open to suggestions if anyone knows a good breeder or place to get some. Feel free to E-Mail me privately if you like. Thanks again! Here's another panther chameleon picture for you all. Enjoy!

Thanks, nice of ya to rub it in ! Hehhee ! Wow, Tyler is AMAZING such wonderful blues!

I have to take some time and look at your site, when I'm done here.

Like those leopards too ! I like so many lizards !

I have a few of the desert lizards myself, not leopards, but 3 chuckwallas , 16 collareds and a desert iguana. And a whole bunch more of other types , to keep me busy !

Hey thanks for NOT laying low, it was nice talking.

And heck I love pics, taking them, and looking at them, so I lucked out, got to see a magnificent panther too !
