Leashes

jcunitz Mar 18, 2004 01:35 PM

Are leashes somthing that can be safely used on beardies? I've seen them used on iguanas. If they are okay to use, how old should the beardie be or how much should he/she weigh before using one?

Thanks

I don't see a need to leash mine, she is about as active as a rock. I certainly wouldn't leash a baby beardie, and I would use the ones that loop around the back legs, instead of the harness ones that goes around the front legs.

I've got a leash for my Dragons(both over 12 inches long). I've only used it once but I do know I felt more secure knowing I could better keep track of them when I had them on the couch and they jumped up and tried to escape behind the couch

I leash up Draconis all the time. He knows he's going outside and ride in the Jeep with me when I do. Whenever I take him outside to soak up some sun, I leash him and usually he stays right with me the entire time. Sometimes he wanders a little bit when he's outside, but mostly he keeps near me for safety.

When he rides in the Jeep he stays on my shoulder or the back of my neck the entire time. He has never tried to cross me up (arms and such), or leap to inaccessable areas I can't get to. I take him to malls and pet stores and he loves the attention. When I have to go to a store that does not accept lizards for obvious reasons (i.e. - grocery stores and such), I just place him on the sunny part of the dashboard with his leash tied to the gearshift and enough length of strap to go to a cooler area when it gets too hot. With the windows cracked, he is content to look out the windshield at all the people!!!

Ohh, in answer to your second question, I started Draconis on his leash when he was just over six mos. old. At least at that age he was more confident with me to want to roam around with me. I wouldn't try a beardie younger than that, and expect to buy a medium leash at that age, then graduate to a large leash as weight permits.

I don't remember the name brand, but it's the only one listed at Pet Smart. They only sell the Medium-sized ones, but other reptile shops can get them in Large and X-Large. Will post a pic soon.

This is a leash we made for him on Halloween. It was patterned after the harness from his normal leash. The kids loved it...

Thank you for the pictures. I will get one. I have been looking for a safer way to have Fuego and Spud out. I worry about them taking off and getting into places that I can get to them.

I use a leash I made with some leather like material for both my beardies. It took them a few times to get used to it but they don't seem to mind in anymore.

They are definitely handy. I'd be paranoid to have my beardie out anywhere without one.
