Reasons for NOT housing multiple snakes together...

lilroach56 Mar 18, 2004 02:28 PM

First of all i know not to house multiple snakes together and i am against it (except for breeding). But at another forum i visit (not able to say the name, e-mail me if you want it) people are saying how snakes can do just as good/better than by keeping them singly. And because i am 13 people won't believe some of the stuff i say. For example someone at another forum (not able to say the name, e-mail me if you want it) said "i paired most of them" and "theres 4 redtails in my big cage". Can you give me some reasons not to house multiple snakes together?

If you spend as much time as I do watching Discovery channel or animal planet when it comes to snakes one thing is usually for sure. Snakes are found in alone. unless its mating season snakes generally live spread out... whenever you see two males in the vicinity of one another they don't stay that way for long. Althoug not typically territirial snakes do have the same sense of dominince as most wild things. not only this but it is also a matter of survival its easier to hide by yourself. Now put all this instinct, survival of the fittest, and dominince factors and cram it into an enclosure that fits in your house if nothing else it puts uneeded stress and pressure on an already wild animal being domesticated. I'm not saying anything will happen bt I will say anything CAN happen. This alone I feel is enough to warrant seperation. However you could always throw in the hundreds of what if's. Who needs the added worry or stress. You dont and neither does your snakes.
