Pics of ornate turtle surgery

tuwhada Mar 18, 2004 02:47 PM

Lily is home and doing well after her surgery is already eating and exploring her tank again. Thank you all for advise and the attached links will have pictures of the surgery that I though you would all like to see. I kept her eggs and I have them setup in vermiculate incubating. Maybe we will be lucky.
Thanks again
Christina

Yeha I actually have the eggs I am going to incubate them. They are about 2 inches long about an 1 or 1 1/2 wide each. They were pretty darn big and you can see how big they are compared to her. And as for her weight when I got her she was 370 grams when she went for the exam when realized she was egg bound she was 330 grams. Post - op she is now only 270 grams. So I need to really fatten her up. I will try to post a pic of how she looks now and what the epoxied shell looks like.
Thanks for all your help

Just out of curiosity, why did the vet go through the shell? I've seen pictures of egg removal that went through the body cavity between the hind leg and the shell - part of the contents of the egg was removed with a needle to make the egg small enough to fit through the incision.

So long as the turtle is recovering safely, that's all that counts, but I was just wondering the reasoning behind this particular procedure.

I don't know the exact answer to that question I have only ever heard of it this way. However it could be b/c the eggs were already starting to harden so it may have been difficult to get it to pass through there, plus they were pretty large eggs, there would not be enough space by her legs. She is not that big of a turtle.

Holy jeebies...those are eggs?!?!?!?!? They're HUGE!!! Glad she survived that operation, and that you were willing to have it done. I'm sure all that was not cheap. May she have many more years to live and her shell heal well. (Some extra calcium and phosphorous should help.)

May the Great Turtle that the World Rides upon in the Ocean of the Universe be with You.

Good Call on getting the surgery. There was absolutely no way she was going to pass those eggs. They're twice the size of normal box turtle eggs. Good luck with her and the eggs.

I had an interesting thing happen with an apparently eggboung turtle... she is a friends turtle, I put her into hibernation at my house, I saw her out and about about 2 weeks ago, so I brought her inside because I knew it was going to get cold again. She laid an egg within an hour of being in my house outside of incubation! It was infertile of course, but I had to do a double take when I walked in to check on her and saw it laying on the bottom of the rubbermaid container...LOL.

Thanks for the pics. I hope everything goes well and that you have some luck with the eggs, too.

Those are wonderfully detailed photos, did you use digital or film? More photos of her healing up would be appreciated, as the turtles ability to recover from shell damage is amazing. Good luck!

I don't know how the pics were taken, the vet took them I think with a digital camera and emailed them to me. I will try to post pics of how she looks now but she is doing great just finished feeding her.
