Housing ball pythons with a savannah monitor?

lateron Mar 18, 2004 03:06 PM

Hello, I recently built a custom reptile enclousure for my ball pythons(4'long 4' wide and 5' tall). I was in the pet store and saw a savannah monitor for sale, so I came home and did a little research and found out that they come from the same environment(ghana), eat the same food(mice) and require the same amount of heat(85-90)degrees. I am going to place trees and grass in the enclousure to try to get it like the natural envionment as much as possible. I wanted to know would it be safe for them or would they try to kill one another?
Thanks,

1-you shouldn't be housing multiple snakes together anyway
2-Savana monitors and BP's will kill each other
3-sav's generally dont make good pets

I disagree with number three. Sav's can make excellent pets, you just need to give them space and handle them a lot, like anything else.

But definatley don't house them together. Depending on who was bigger, they would surely kill and/or eat one another. You also risk spreading disease from species to species. Also, like another poster commented on, the basking spot required for a sav is generally 35-40 degrees warmer than the one required for a Ball. On top of all this, one or the other or both would probably be stressed out to the max, and would not eat, and eventually die of starvation (the sav would go first, though!).

Get a seperate cage for the sav, which will eventually require at least a 2'H x 4'L x 2.5' D enclosure bare minimum. Both Ball Pythons and Savannah monitors can make excellent pets, as long as the necessities are met, and that includes seperate enclosures for both species. Good luck!

There are so many things wrong with your post, at least one of which is that savannah monitors need a basking site of up to 130 degrees. They'll die slowly without this and this would cook a BP nice and quick. Another reason why you can't house them together.

Your monitor will EAT or at least KILL your ball python, but hey, don't let that stop you. They're YOUR animals, you can do whatever you darn well want with them and don't let anyone else here tell you otherwise.

LOL, funny post. Thanks for the laugh.
