Zoo-Med Powersun MVB or T-Rex Activeheat MVB

rjharper Mar 18, 2004 03:07 PM

I'm about to move over from fluorescent UV bulbs to MVB, beacsue I'm concerned about the intensity/distance effect beyond 6". which of the above bulbs is better? I'd like to use the 100W flood which has a minimum distance of 6". I'd appreciate any feedback from those of you who are currently using them.

Also, I'm about to make a fake-rock wall for the back of his tank, so any pointers for that would be great too.

Thanks for the help,

I use powersun 100w and 160w in enclousures that are 17 inches deep. different lengths and widths and tops.(full screen to partial) No experience with T Rex, The Powersun is cheaper if bought on the net vs pet stores also wherever it is bought it has 1 year warrenty, but you have to send it by mail to the Co. and they replace it in about 2-3 weeks. I am thinking of trying T rex next time I purchase a bulb. I also use them on Nigerian Uromastyx in conjunction with a ceramic heat bulb.

Hello Ross. I'm currently doing a UVB research project and two of the bulbs I'm studying are the Powersun and T-Rex Active UV. You can see all of my results by clicking on the link below... I think they are both great bulbs and I'm currently using both of them. However, the Powersun has a more natural light effect while the T-Rex seems to make everything greenish. I hope this helps.

I have been happy with the T-Rex bulbs. I use them on both my beardies and my skinks.

We about fell over when one tube we have on a hospital tank had one of the best UVB readings of any of them, its 7 months old!!!

I figured it was about shot and needed replacing. Very strange, we changed over to the MV as 4 years ago we had problems with the tubes and poor output. Since then I had not bothered to check any tubes for years.

The workings of the Active UV heat 100 watt spots are really unique, actually gaining reading as you get farther away til a point then it reverses and also greater reading spreading out as it ages, but new ones are reversed. Another thing we noticed is that the readings are really high for about 24 hours, then drop and remain fairly steady, so people might want to set those up first for a few day before putting animals under it.

I have about a dozen more to test that are not set up, and will get those to you as I can.

I saw you wanted to test the GE Spectrum. I have a couple of cases of those, if you want I can mail a few boxes, we use them to bring up light intensity. and for the indoor tanks of those that are normally outdoors in good weather.

BTW, we have three people here testing them and verifying them and one is a manufacture of reptile products, so they are accurate, checked by us all and then rechecked in an hour.
