wahlberg velvet gecko health

rivanking Mar 18, 2004 04:24 PM

I have a friend who has one of these geckos. I have to admit, she doesn't care for it as I would, not providing the right heat or diet, but until I persuade her to give it to me I want to try and help it's problem. He has two very prominent lumps on the dorsal-caudal side of the cranium. They are completely symmetrical and located in the same exact spots. Relative to the gecko's size (about 7" they are the size of peas. I do not know that much of the anatomy of lizards but I thought they might be either swollen salivary glands or lymph nodes. I know it is difficult to diagnose without seeing it but I thought maybe someone has encountered this before. I am pretty sure it is not species specific. Any help would be appreciated. -John-

I'm not sure what the symptoms may be, but it could possibly by an aural inflammation or infection. It would be best for a vet diagnose the symptom. The main objective would be to get the husbandry under control; ie.: temps, diet, lighting, caging, etc.

Thanks for responding to my message. My 1st guess was some sort of aural abcess. The placement is right and the conditions aren't too good in which the gecko lives. Diet is only crickets (once weekly,maybe...), poor calcium in diet (crickets never dusted until very recently when I stepped in), bad lighting, and poor temperature(too cold and drafty). The other problem is that she keeps it in a tank with a leopard gecko and an armadillo lizard. I am taking the lizard tomorrow to the vet hospital I work at and then keeping him at my house. Thanks for re-affirming my suspicion. It's up to the doctor now.
