What brand of halogen bulbs do you use?Do you have any pictures of them? You get a 120 degrees at how far away?

The only question I can comment on is who uses UVB bulbs. I do - my larger cage has both an MV bulb and a UVB fluorescent. The smaller cage and the two anole cages only have UVB fluorescents. I know many people are confident enough to use supplements to get the proper D3 and others are fortunate enough to be able to keep their critters outside. I'm not knowledgable enough to trust supplements - how much to use? How much do they eat? How do I know if both lizards in the cage got the right amount? I prefer to play it safer and use the UVB since I don't know enough.

I also use UV lighting (UVB fluorescent). I use an elevated basking spot to get the proper basking temp. I would not recommend using T-Rex beardie dust because it is made for a canivorous lizard (thus, is meat-based). It would be best to buy T-Rex Uromastyx dust to keep your uro in good shape. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Hope this helps

O I didn't know there was a uro dust.thanks for the replies.O can I use like lizard carpet or shelfliner for a uro? What would a natural habitat look like for a uro?I have some large blade grass that I bought from a craft store dunno if I could use though.

thanks

Just a heads up on the dusts for future reference. There are 3 dragon dust. 2 veggie dusts...the growth has more protien and calcium than the other...and ther is an insect dust which also has protien but is mostly calcium carbonate. The Protien in all the dusts including the Uro(even though it is a lower percentage) is isolated whey protien. It is a high quality protien produced from dairy. Hope this helps and let me know if you need more clarification. I like that basking stack you built, by the way.

Ra really loves his basking stack. He uses it so much now I don't know how he could've done without it. It's really cheap and easy to build.

Oh, and thanks for the heads-up on the dust. I'm actually using the T-Rex Sandfire Superfoods Uro dust now. Ra really likes the taste of the stuff.

Hi Bill,

I love the concept of the uromastyx dust, but I don't like the very general directions. If I am to use this as a sole supplement, eliminating the Rep-cal calcium and Herptivite, I would want to know I am giving them the proper amount. I just ordered the 2 1/2 pound container of the uro dust, but have been a chicken and used it with the rep-cal and herptivite. Any suggestions as to dose per weight of the greens? Thanks!

Pam

Come on Pam stop being a chicken...have faith in the dust...lol. You have to kind of think of the dust as a food itself, because in a way that's what it is. It has all the macro and micro nutrients that your uro needs plus other things like plants extracts that may enhance color and probiotics for a healthy gut. The greens just round the dust out and act as a delivery medium. I don't know to many Uros that will eat a pile of dust. All that being said, you should use it kind of liberally. I can't tell you exactly how much I use for x amount of greens, because I kind of look for how well the geeens are coated and not how much i'm adding. I would estimate about 1 table spoon of dust for every 3 cups of chopped greens. This is what I have been feeding and supplementing my malis with for about 6 months now, and they are thriving. I will try to come up with a more acurate protocal for using the dust, it might be helpful for other forum users as well as yourself.
good luck

Thanks Bill. So you are not using any other supplements and are just using the uro dust? Just want to make sure before I change my routine.

Pam

azteclizard Mar 20, 2004 09:28 AM

Your welcome Pam,
I use only the Uro dust on every feeding, and that's all. I also use t-rex dusts for my BD's, Rhacodactylus, and leopard geckos. My Rhacs only eat the meal replacement powders and have for about a year now. I think they are great products. Trust me, I was reluctant at first to stop using the products I have for years(rep-cal,miner-all,herptivite). After many conversations with Allen Repashy(formulated the diets) and researching the ingredients, and applying what I already know about nutrition (I have a minor along with a major in bio), I had to switch.
good luck

Thanks again Bill. I will just use the dust on the uro salad. I will save my rep-cal and herptivite for dusting crickets for my frogs, gargoyle and monitors. I purchased the gargoyle gecko food, but have only been using it a few times a week. I alternate between crickets, peach or banana baby food and the t-rex food for the gecko.

I use 50 watt halogen flood bulbs to get those temps. I have never used a uvb producing bulb for any lizard i've kept or bred in the past 14 years. You could use the BD vgf if you are getting a baby or juvi, or the BD vmf for an adult. When you run out you should switch to the Uro dust. It is lower in protien and higher in fiber than the BD dusts. This should theoretically be healthier for your Uro on the long term.
good luck
