Yes, and I'm sorry but another color morph question

skmcwilliams Mar 18, 2004 07:28 PM

I am truly sorry if this has been rehashed a thousand times, but the search for archives give me squat about this so here it is. My friend and I are having a disagreement on how a patternless was actually made, did this morph just come out of the wood work, or was it worked at by selective breeding. Same with the blizzard. Also I know there are a few examples of a black leo. would this just be a "mutated" morph that pops up from time to time, or is it from people who have been breeding the darkest leos with the most black that could eventually be pure black. Any help would be appreciated, I loved genetics in school and though I love my leo's as pets first I find their genetic coding of colors pretty amazing also.

patternless and blizzard are simple recessive traits, which means that they originated through a mutation and basically just showed up out of nowhere somewhere along the line. The dark leos (I don't think there actually have been any solid black ones) are just line bred (darkest leos available to each other throughout generations), which means there are a lot of genes contributing to the appearance, and the alleles coding for darker coloration are selected for when choosing individuals from breeding.

As I understand it, the first Blizzard Lizards (Blizzards) first came about as an "accident". They (don't remember who, lol) first found one solid white animal. Bred it to make Heterozygous animals, and bred them back to the original to continue the line of Blizzards.

Patternless are just simple recessive traits that appeared.

outright explained blizzard, but then just said patternless is a simple recessive trait...lol

Haha, I knew about Blizzard, but I'm clueless as how Patternless came about. I couldn't just leave him hanging without my two cents about them, could I!? Hehe.

lol...wouldn't have expected you not to! but any simple ressessive trait will have originated the same way...a mutation somewhere along the line that created the trait, and then breeding back to produce more animals expressing the trait.

Yes, yes. But the thing is is that whenever the people, whomever they may be (I hate losing my memories, lol.), aquired the gecko. It was in rough shape, and they brought it back from death's door and yadda yadda yadda, we have the Blizzard Lizards. See, who could pass up a story like that!? It's beautiful. Has suspense, horror, and a happy ending!
