What to see when candleing eggs?

merlin7676 Mar 18, 2004 09:04 PM

My female gecko laid 2 eggs on sunday which I have in the hovabator. I pulled them out tonight and held up a flashlight to them b/c I read you can see blood vessels to tell if they are fertile. The smaller of the two has a tiny red ribbon near the top of it (not top of egg, top part lying in the perlite). The larger of the two has a big red ring inside it with a red smudge in the middle. Does this sound okay? Thanks

merlin

If they show red or pink they should be fertile. Regardless, incubate until you are certain.

If you see any type of red/pink, especially a ring shape, its a good sign that it may be fertile. I agree with everyone else, don't give up on them unless they get really moldy, completely collapse or smell really bad. I've had eggs that look infertile a few days after being laid and the next week they are filled with red veins and the embroyo becomes distinguishable. Good luck, and keep us updated.

You don't have to be excruciatingly careful. Just try not to tip it around too much, and be gentle. Just don't be afraid that you may break the egg or anything, which you won't. If you are too apprehensive about doing it, then that is when a lot of accidents happen.
