Okeetee or Normal?

Smuffin Mar 18, 2004 09:18 PM

I purchased this snake as an okeetee and now I am wondering if she really is an okeetee or a Normal? Your advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

It goes back to the old argument about what is subjectively considered an okeetee corn snake. Is it simply from the okeetee hunt club region in south carolina -OR- is it okeetee based on its appearance of having well-defined black borders with brightly colored red/orange saddles & background.

If the person that sold it to you is reliable then I would call it an okeetee. But first I would contact them to see where their parents originated from. If it was a petstore or an unknown/unreliable source then I would call it 'normal'.

I personally refer to okeetees based on a certain look. Others simply call anything an okeetee that comes from the above mentioned region...even if its the ugliest corn on earth. Even if the 2nd is the case, its difficult to trust locale simply b/c someone could have released a corn in the jasper county area and it could have been found by a collector thinking its a pure okeetee when its really foreign to that isolated population.

And further more, as Rich Z pointed out on his website, whats to say that a corn from another area travels on its own into the okeetee hunt club area??? Is it still an okeetee? Hmmm..

Like I said at first, its all very subjective.

That satisfies the unwritten standard for an Okeetee. It's actually a very nice one. Great colors and they'll get better as it matures.

That is a gorgeous snake! What I'm going to do if I sell any Okeetees is refer to them as "Okeetee Phase" meaning they have that "look" that comes to mind when you think of a nice Okeetee.
Since I have no idea if mine are from a certain locale I don't want to imply that they are by just calling them Okeetees.
Just my opinion.

>>Where did you get your Okeetees?
If they were sold to you as okeetees and they look like Okeetees then you would not be wrong in selling the offspring as Okeetee.
You didn't get them from someone you don't trust did you?
Got pics?

I'm not concerned with locale, I am drawn to the "look". So I did not even ask about locale when purchasing my animals. I have "Okeetees" from Kathy Love, Rich Z, one from a small hobbyist, and even one from PetCo! I also have a female corn sold to me as normal who I believe would be a nice mate for one of my "Okeetee" males. If I sell any offspring down the road I will always be honest about the parents. I'll have to see if I can get some good pics sometime soon.
Thanks!!!

Well, you know there is no doubt about the ones from kathy and Rich and I'm sure you can trust the hobbyist so that leaves the petco.
You hit the nail on the head. Just tell people what you know of the parents and you can't go wrong. If they see the snake and buy it because they like it's looks and they know where it came from then everyone's happy.
I would love to see pics.
Tonight is feeding night so I hope to get some new pics of all my snakes. I will have to post some tomorrow. Especially my four Okeetees. One from Don at SMR and three from a private breeder in a trade for a couple of eastern black kings.
He told me who's stock they were from but I didn't recognise the name and don't remember it now, anyway.
