Glass Dancing

diseasebattery Mar 19, 2004 03:46 AM

Hi new poster here, I have a Mali Uro and he glass dances like none other. He is an adolescent, and I was curious as to whether their is anything I can do to cut down on that. Currently he is in a 40 gal aquarium. Thank you

hey!!! glad to have you!!!

if your uro is insesently glass dancing then he needs to have stimulation added to his tank. like hiding treats in his cage and extra cage stuff for him to climb on.

others can elaborate more later, i've gotta get up in an hour....so, i have to go.

Ok that sounds like a good idea, but what constitutes as a treat exactly? I know flowers are considered pretty tasty for them, but their out of season here in michigan any other ideas?

You can try adding things around the perimeter of the cage to discourage some of the glass dancing. Making the cage interested helps.

I believe Sunfox uses Juvenile Iguana Pellets as a treat. Never tried 'em myself....

sorry for not answering sooner been on vacation and celebrating my birthday (today).

for treats i use either the juvie iguana pellets dry or i ocassionally use the juvie beardie pellets, but use those very sparingly. thats the only protein mine recieves and he only gets 1-2 everyother week.

i also use flowers of different colors (yellows and reds are really liked).

for stimulation around the cage i add branches and other cage furnature around the edges like was said above. another thing that can help with stimulation is having a cage mate if and only if, your cage is big enough.

hope this helps.

What size cage should you have for cage mates? btw I think mine is male, is it possible to put a female in with him, if so what age should she be relative to him?

trevorbennett Mar 22, 2004 11:08 PM

how old is your male? how big?

it is....i would say if your male is 8 inches then get a adult female, that way if there is any breeding attempts then she won't have as much of a chance of getting egg bound.

most people say that a 4x2x2 if given lots of hides and seperate basking spots and still given the temp gradient they should be fine....i agree. a 4x2x2 should be fine for a pair...bigger for more than that.

hope this helps

So he is missing sth in his cage. Check your hide siystems, add tunnels and hide boxes , check temp gradiensts AND last not least upgrade t a bigger tank.
In the wild Uros have to roam a lot to find enough food. Hence they need space to move. Glass dancing almost never occurs in big tanks. For an adult mali, I would not recommend anything with a floor space of less than 5 x 3 ft.

My Uro would like a bigger cage, and it is in the plans. However, I stopped worrying about his glass dancing quite so much as a sign of unhappiness when he started doing it when I let him out to play in the living room too! Now he is not very bright, admittedly, but this room is about 20ft by 15ft, definitely a good sized room! He comes out, explores, finds a wall, door, cabinet, and basically glass dances there too! The only thing I could think of was that he was actually trying to climb the walls... but judging by the way he navigates a low branch that is in his tank I began to doubt that as a valid reason for the dancing. Anyone have any thoughts about this behaviour?

Hi!

I don't have any new thought to add to this except to say that this is exactly what I tried to get across in an earlier glass-dancing thread.

I let my Mali run on the floor for the first time, and after about two seconds, he ran straight to a box on the floor and danced against it.

I believe it's a climbing instinct. There probably aren't that many sheer walls in nature that they can't climb, so they likely think that if they keep at it, they'll be able to scale the wall...

Also, it's likely a bit of a learned behaviour in captives, as these guys watch all of their parents/companions doing the same thing.

I still don't think it's something to worry about, if you are keeping good care of your uro, and have a proper set-up anyways.

My two cents,
Nicki
