Baby Cornsnake behavior?

Uncloudy Mar 19, 2004 05:08 AM

I have two baby cornsnakes born in August 2003, my first corns and have kept kingsnakes before. I have had them since late December 2003 they have spent like 98-99% of their time in their hides ,which baby kingsnakes I have had didn't do to the same extent. I am hoping this is just normal instinctive and protective baby cornsnake behavior and they will grow out of it.

Is it normal baby cornsnake behavior to be so reclusive and spent 98% of its time in a hide?

As they baby cornsnakes grow older will they come out of their hides more and show off their great colors?

And the terrarium temps are very good with of course plenty of hides.
Any reponses would be greatly appreciated.
Happy Herping,
Uncloudy

Mine did that too when they were little. They are both yearlings now and come out alot. Esp at night. Do you give them a natural day/night cycle? If lights are left on constantly they will always hide from what I've read.

I have six cornsnakes. Some hide all the time, and others will come out and explore their cage. I have a few that will almost NEVER use their cages. I have males and females that will do this. I think it is based on the personality of the snake. You may have shy ones! LOL

Thank You for the responses, np's, and Janome the terrarium light in on a daily timer. I am hoping with time my corns will grow out of their extreme hiding behavior and roam more around their cages to show off their beautiful colors. Don't get me wrong I am not dissappionted with my corns, but when I got them I did not expect them to be as reclusive as my Brazilian Rainbow Boa or a Dumerils Boa. Either way I've had them since about 4 months after birth and they get handled alot and are a great addition to my collection and I am extremely comfortable with my 3.5 yr old daughter handling them than with her around some of my other boas.
Peace, Love, and Happy Herping
