male or female, what would you guess? (large pics inside)

ciliatus Mar 19, 2004 06:05 AM

hi people,

i need your help please. about 8 months ago i bought 6 unsexed juveniles, because its almost impossible to buy single females over here in europe, and i already had a one year old male, that i wanted to breed with...

meanwhile they are about 10-11 months old, and i would say i got lucky and have 5 females out of 6 geckos. the only problem is, my male only seems to like brown females and attacked the 2 yellow females on sight. now im not sure anymore if they are females.

ok here some pics

female?? #1

female #2

to compare, here a pics of the 10-11 months old male

The two bottom photos are of a male the others are female. In my humble opinion. Cresty's are one of the easiest to sex once they become mature. Can't mis their big um... how to say politely..... well you get the picture, heck you took it!

hehe, yes, im quite sure about the male...

the only thing that made me wonder is, that my oldest male attacked the 2 yellow females. perhaps he simply doenst like
their color, as he accepted all brown girls. *g*

thanks for your opinion

When you say "attacking" what kind of behavior are you describing exactly? Neck biting and rough play are sometimes signs that you need to pop on a Barry White CD Oh Ya!

Can you be more specific on the attack part? There is good and bad attack but both will create a degree of stress and should be monitored carefully. Sometimes they will need to be seperated all year with the exception of quick "congigal"sp?)visits and only then if you are interested in breeding them. Keep a close eye though you wouldn't want to loose a little Cresty to big daddy! Best of luck!

hehe no barry white cd biting, that was what he did with the 3 brown girls, neck bite and mating.

he didnt target their necks, he mainly targetted their feet, and wouldnt let go. he (the lagre male) even squeeked, that was the first time i ever heard a sound of a crested, and chased them around the cage, till i separated them again.
i tried that about 2 times on different days, with each gecko, didnt work =o/

kind of sounds like over aggresive mating behavior to me. Not worth loosing a gecko over though to find out. The squeaking you speak of is quite normal however when they are amorous. The first time mine did it my son woke me up because he thought something got into their cage, god knows what with all of the lizards we keep I got up and we listened to them and then searched the enclosure only to find them "cuddled" up in the corner. Now it seems like when breeding time rolls around the "squeaking" starts as soon as the lights go out. They are in our living room and often while watching tv with the lights out we hear the "squeak, squeak, squeak" sounds of Cresty boy making a booty call. It is quite humorous! Best of luck Ciliatus! How is that Tegu doing? I seem to remember you in the Tegu forum with a nifty cage you built.

thank you for your experiences. =) the only strange thing is, he didnt show any of that behaviour with the other females. no squeaking, no aggressive biting, nothing. (well not nothing the did neckbite and mate with them)

within minutes
i put the brown female in the cage -> everything is fine and relaxed
i put the yellow female in the cage -> aggressiv, squeaking, biting legs, female biting back ....
i put one brown female in the cage -> everything is fine again

perhaps you are right and it was just over agressive mating behaviour, i thing i will try it again whitin the next days.

and thx for asking, my tegu is fine, she often demands to have a walk outside the cage, she is very curious, hungry and sometimes she is still scared of me.
today i will some adjustments to my cage. =)

Yea those really look like females especially when compared to the guy on the bottom! And at that age my understanding is that it should be as clear as daylight. I agree with the others about the attacking. It really depends on how he's attacking them. I know what you mean about finding females, and the easiest (and usually the cheapest) way is to go the path you took. Buy a bunch of cute babies and hope some females turn out. Best of luck to you.

i really dont know how to explain the best. he didnt try to neckbite for mating with the yellow girls. he was squeeking and angry, and chased them all around the cage.

i currently got this male together with the 3 other females, and he is nice to them(also had sex with them ), completely different behaviour.

thanks a lot for your opinion =)

They all look male to me but then again I am not experienced at sexing crested geckos.

Another point though, isn't 10 months rather young to be breeding your females? I seem to recall female cresteds should be at least 18 months, if not more...

azteclizard Mar 19, 2004 03:28 PM

As with most lizard species, age is not as important as size and condition when considering breeding. With cresteds I wait until my females are in the 35-40 gram range to start to group them up with males. Quite frankly, you can pair or group them up once you know the sex, they will breed when they are ready.

will since they are all the same age, dont you see a slight difference on the last 2 pics?

from what i read its like bill said. age doesnt count as much as weight, and they wont breed until they are not ready. plus i didnt only introduce a single female, its now a group of 1,3. so it isnt as much stress for the females.

best regards

ingo
