Retained eye cap

jimbat Mar 19, 2004 07:23 AM

I have a Honduran that retained an eye cap from a shed during brumation. How should I go about removing it, or should I just leave her alone until her next shed???
Thanks

Most references note it is OK to wait and check after the next shed. So no health issues just yet. My suggestion is, using a warm, moist rough towel have the snake slither through it. Apply just a little bit of pressure on her/his head to soften the cap and the resistnace might get it off. Do this a while and see if the cap came off. I have had sucess doing this with some corns that had the cap stay in place.

If the snakes temperment is not up to this, and you hve to wait until the next shed, you may want to help the shed with a humid box for him/her to go into to keep the slouth from drying out and flacking off instead of shedding in a continuous piece. That may have been an issue about the shed during hibernating.

Good luck....
