new diet

antares Mar 19, 2004 11:15 AM

I just starting giving my Tegu pinkies two days ago, he ate 2 on the first day and 4 yesterday, along with crickets each time. Since it is a new food for him, how often should I feed him pinkies in relation to crickets? Also, what is a good amount to feed him on the days he gets them? Thanks.

I've been told to try to avoid pinkies. Of course, this was after I bought 100 frozen! I plan on feeding them to him anyway, I just make sure to dust them with calcium like I do crix. Pinkies have low calcium due to the undeveloped bones. Go ahead and feed pinkies if you want, they are nutritious with the exception of the calcium, just dust them first. Mine eats 9 a day when I feed them to him, and he is only 17"! It'll differ between individuals. If I had it to do over again, I would stick with insects until he is big enough to eat fuzzies/hoppers.

nothing wrong with pinkies, but at 17" you should be using mice. Even hoppers would be too small. You can give rodents 2-3 times a week and turkes 1-2 times. just make sure there is lots of fruit asw well. Watch his weight. If he gets to fat you can cut back a bit.

I fed him his first mouse yesterday (small mouse, not adult size yet), and he got it down, but he had to chew a bit! I do plan on feeding mice from now on, but I'm gonna use the pinkies I bought first. He ate 10 tonight, so it shouldn't take long! He doesn't like fruit now though. I will try some more techniques to see what he likes. When should I stop feeding insects?

if the mice are FK or FT you can try using a syringe with no needle to fill them with soft fruit like bannana or mango otherwise mix it with turkey. Insectsa are fine at any age but it gets to the point where it's like you eating a m&m or popcorn, It takes a lot. You can try large roaches, mine love them.
