Spirulina

Ghost425 Mar 19, 2004 12:32 PM

I just thought that i would mention that after supplementing my tegu's diet with powdered spirulina, he is healthier and more active than ever before. It also makes for a good natural substitute for powdered reptile vitamins...

That's cool. What is the benefit of spirulina vs repcal or minerall? Cheaper, better nutrients/ingredients? Has he just recently come out of hibernation? I only wonder if he is more active due to being later in the season. I have heard questions about spirulina, but this is the first time I have heard any results, good or bad.

Well, it isn't cheaper, but it is more natural. Algae provide the basis for the global food chain, and the nutrients are not synthesized like in herp vitamins (note- repcal/mineral calcium supplements are still necessary). It contains complete, balanced protein and a wide range of valuable nutrients. Spirulina is approximately 70% easily digestible protein. It contains 18 out of 22 amino acids and all of the essential amino acids, making it a unique vegetarian source of complete protein. Better yet, Spirulina protein is 95% digestable, as opposed to beef protein is estimated to be only 20% digestible. It also contains important enzymes, which naturally assist in the digestion process. It also adds a pleasant fruity aroma to the food. I do not hibernate my animals, and he has been very active for quite some time.

That sounds like a good idea. What brand do you use? Is it a powder or a whole food?

I bought a bottle of powdered spirulina at whole foods in the supplements section. one bottle is 8 dollars, but it lasts a long time. I make a huge batch of tegu food every 3-4 mos, and i probably use about an eighth of the bottle. The brand really shouldn't matter if you buy at a place like whole foods.
